Why tabs accumulate

Why We Hoard Tabs

A browser tab isn’t just a webpage. It can be a reminder, an unfinished task, or something we don’t want to lose.

  1. External To-Do Lists

An open tab keeps something visible. Instead of remembering “I need to come back to this,” the browser remembers for you.

  2. Open Loops

Unfinished tasks can remain mentally active. Keeping the tab open gives that unfinished business a visible place to live.

  3. Loss Aversion & FOMO

Closing a tab can feel like giving up a possibility: What if I need this later? Keeping it open avoids having to make that decision.

  4. Limited Attention

We can only actively attend to a limited amount of information at once. Dozens of open tabs don’t necessarily mean dozens of things you’re thinking about, but they can represent many competing contexts.

The Mental Cost

The problem isn’t simply having tabs.
It’s what they can represent.

Too many unfinished contexts can make it harder to find what matters, decide what to do next, and return to a task without reconstructing where you left off.

  • Tab overload isn’t a diagnosis.
  • And your tab count isn’t a direct measurement of cognitive load.
  • But it is an observable behavior.

Tablox makes that behavior visible.

It doesn’t

  • Diagnose you.
  • Measure your cognitive load.
  • Tell you how many tabs you’re allowed to have.

It does

Make the invisible visible.

Five states. One glance.

Tablox counts your open tabs and paints its icon in the colour for the current state. The badge is the exact count. Move the dial to see it work.

Click the icon. One short explanation, then it’s gone.
The in-page toast: a yellow pill reading “Tab archaeology begins”, shown at the top of the page you are reading.
Cross a threshold and it says so — once, briefly, on the page you’re reading.
